Dottie if you have used your computer that long and have less than 300 "errors" in your registry I'd guess your computer is in great shape!  The pop up is a sales gimmick, and you are correct in your assumption that they are trying to sell you something.  If you want to clean up these errors, go to www.macecraft.com and download jv16, one of the most dependable and highly regarded registry tools on the market.  You can use it free for a 60 day trial.  I've used it for years and it has never failed me in any way.

Cleaning the registry of errors is, I think, a bit of a fad, akin to defragmentation of the HDD.  Both topics got a lot of play years ago and some experts now believe neither is necessary unless the computer evidences problems.  It makes me feel good to remove registry errors but I have never noticed any improvement in my computer's performance after such an action.
