The problems with epoxy repairs on exterior tile are significant. First, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the epoxy is much higher than that of the tile. Every day the sun hits that facade, the epoxy is working its way off the wall as it responds to the temperature rising. Second issue is moisture. Anytime you cover a significant area with epoxy, you'd better have moisture seriously under control - something that rarely happens, and that leads to moisture entrapment and delamination. Third- UV. Epoxies will not retain color or gloss in sunlight, even through glass, much less in direct exposures.

Subject: [BP] tile restoration or repair/

> I had a call from Covington KY, Ms Esther Johnson owns an old theater with tile & glass block on the front.

>

> The tile had been damaged by a slipcover installation.  When cover was removed the tiles were repaired and I think may have had an epoxy or other coating.  Now this repair job is failing.  Small  thin wafers of the brittle  coating are coming off.

>

> She is looking for direction and assistance to have situation this corrected / repaired.

>

> Google Madison theater  click on the place page.  Good photo of the problem there.

> Is there any hope for the situation?  If so who might be up to it?
