Diane; I believe Apple devices use MP4 or Quicktime formats for video the extensions would be .MP4 .MPV. or .MOV For a video converter I use a free program called Super http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html it lists apple ipod in the output type, but I haven't actually tried it.
