Dear All,

The Writers' Association of The Gambia regrets to announce the death of Mr Hassum Ceesay (Sr). He passed away last Wednesday (19th May 2010) and was laid to rest on Thursday (20th May). He was one of the co-founders of Ndaanan, a literary magazine, first published in The Gambia, in March 1971.

Mr Ceesay, who hailed from Panchang village in Upper Saloum, worked for the United Nations (UN)
before he retired and settled at Kololi. In Sir Dawda's autobiography, Kairaba, readers are told that The Gambian Mission to the United Nations in New York was first opened by Hassum Ceesay and Galandou Goree Ndiaye in February 1979. Hassum Ceesay served as Counsellor and Galondou Goree Ndiaye as Mission Secretary.

Hassum Ceesay is related to Mr Hassoum Ceesay (Jnr), the historian and who is
presently the Director of the Copyright Bureau in The Gambia.
