J. H. S. Johnstone, in his 1908 "The Horse Book: A Practical Treatise on
the American Horse Breeding Industry," favored the use of devices to limit
masturbation by stallions. They were similar to the large, cone-shaped
collars used to keep dogs from scratching wounds.
J. H. Sanders, editor of Breeder's Gazette, opposed allowing horses to
breed on Sundays.
