J. H. S. Johnstone, in his 1908 "The Horse Book: A Practical Treatise on the American Horse Breeding Industry," favored the use of devices to limit masturbation by stallions.  They were similar to the large, cone-shaped collars used to keep dogs from scratching wounds.
 
J. H. Sanders, editor of Breeder's Gazette, opposed allowing horses to breed on Sundays.
