 Mboge,

Taking the time to address the madness going on in The Gambia is a noble exercise. There are hundreds of Gambians on this forum who either do not have the time to write, or a are not interested in writing. Which is okay or not okay depedning on individual opinions. No need to apologize for writing. It is only by applying pressure in whatever ways we can that we can break the evil forces oppressing our nation. Please forgive me if I sound patronizing. I do not intend to be. It's a pleasure reading your postings.

Gambia L'ers,

I apologise for bombarding you with my posts of late.  I would soon retire to my cell in the next coming weeks for i will have my plate full to the brim with things to do.

I am really mad at what is happening to the innocent people of the beloved  the country called the Gambia and having to explain to my colleagues about what they are reading and hearing about this beautiful land.  This is the reason i have to vent my madness somewhere and thus you are my victims.

" Mr. Chenge said, “We are applying under Section 68, Subsection (1) (i) of the Criminal Procedure Code to withdraw both charges against the accused person. We are withdrawing the charges in the interest of peace and justice,” concluded DPP."  (Foroyaa 20/03/09)

The idea of peace and justice being attained is inutile (useless) if it is not addressed sincerely and transformatively.  Peace means different things to different people. It may be the latency of conflict as those who are concerned with the trajectory of conflict dynamics are wont to quip.   For others it is about the harmony of a relationship etc.  The definition is fluid and can be fashioned differently and scaled depending on context and circumstances.

Justice as well implies even-handedness, fairlplay, comprises the honourable dispensation of the truth, conscionable attitude and behaviour.  Justice is presumably applied without prejudice before the law.

Thus in the inorder for both justice and peace to be perceived and seen to be real and tangible it must be sincere.  These principles are not just attained by merely uttering them.  One cannot just pluck them from nowhere and voila assume that they are achieved.  Transforming something into peace and justice by definition warrants profound change in habits, actions and attitudes.  For attitudes and habits to change for the better the first step must to be in understanding the causes of ones actions.  Acknowledgement of the causes then will give rise to actions that are just and peaceable.  Attempting to address the symtoms  and knowingly avoiding the nitty-gritty of the problem is simply an a exercise in futility.

Professor Jammeh and his appointed goons and mercenary judiciary moonlighting as legal luminaries, must be aware that  releasing political opponents who were illegally imprisoned in the first place and attempting to take the high road on peace and justice will end in road a block if the a reality check is not administered.

Releasing Halifa Salllah and dropping one set of charges and coming up with new ones is really silly and laughable.  Letting the man out was inevitable since keeping him confined and taking him to trial would have exposed the incredulousness of the charges proferred against him.  It was the reasonable thing to do so the government deserve no pad on the back.

The Jammeh regime must stop the intimidation, bullying, torturing, abduction, raping and destruction of the Gambian society.  The non-negotiable rights of the people must be respected and upheld.  Democratic governance must be implanted in the psyche of the rulers and the collective good must be the only aim for the government to strive towards.

The humiliation of innocent folks must be halted.  Journalist, politicians and ordinary citizens must be free to express and associate with whomever and whatever they chose as long as it is reasonably within the parameters of acceptable standards of civilised  and democratic governance.

Tranforming the way Jammeh relates to his fellow citizens towards mutual respect and equality will bring sustainable peace and justice and it is the only way forward.
