John Ashurst was a dear friend ; I knew him from when I lived in Scotland
I always I admired the way he interacted with the mason craftsman to make him feel he was part of the team and unlike the tooth brush crowd of conservation actually valued his interpetation and knowledge .
In my minds eye I  can see him now outside  a traditional pub on a pinic bench near Hadrians wall studying his notes and nursing a pint ....
a hammer on  chisel salute  John you will be missed   Py
