I had always assumed that clinkers were very high heat
fired brick and hard. Often glass-like. Actually like blast furnace slag I grew
up near in western PA. Always assumed this would provide good performance. I
have no memory of seeing deteriorated clinker bricks. However, sometimes
clinkers are intermixed with common brick and those may deteriorate. I also
assume the clinkers could have inappropriate inclusions in the clay or not
perform well in freeze thaw or the mortar may have been
inappropriate.
I have been able to get clinker matches from a number of
sources. One less than great was Glen Gery replicated custom shaped bricks to
rebuild a chimney at the Planting Fields Arboretum after being struck by
lightning. They were able to match the twisting basket weave chimney but the
"clinker" part was a painted on die. Looked okay from the ground but not up
close.
Sources include: "The Brick Yard", "Colonial Brick",
Marseilles Brick", "Old Carolina Brick", "Spaulding Brick", "Vermont Brick".

Okay, boys and girls, I may have a project which will require
replacement of decorative clinker brick belt courses, sloped copings, and
window surrounds in rubble stone (over terracotta block) walls built
apparently in the 1920's, in north Joisey. The existing clinker brick is
in fair to poor condition, making me think it's inherently a defective product,
in addition to being picturesque. Much of the brick is also
sloped, further exposing it to water penetration.
Am I
right about clinkers being inherently defective, or is there sound clinker
brick? Anybody got a currently-available source of good clinker
brick? If they're good, are they still clinkers?
