The original cedar shingles on my house are nailed to strapping, not a solid deck. My question to Rudy, "Was 'his' strapping nailed directly to the rafters as in new construction or did he nail thru the old existing roofing to the rafters?" My question may be moot due to requirements to remove at least the top 2 layers of my roof (both assfault shingles) but I am interested in finding some cost savings if reasonable.

Funny, I read "over" as a noun related to strapping too, rather than as
a verb.

Eric, if the house was built with cedar shingles on the roof, were the
roof sheathing boards laid as strapping or butted together for a solid
deck?

D.

Strapping is horizontal strips attached to the roof framing or
rafters. In the case of the barn I used 1x3 Port Orford Cedar strapping
directly on the rafters at 12" OC. It was great for doing the
installation because it was like a giant full width ladder. On the house
I used it over the structural insulated panels. I do recommend that in
historic building situations as well since adding insulating panels over
the existing fabric is totally reversible. It's important to consider
the weight, but with closed cell foam, that's not a lot per square foot.

Thanks for the help you all!

        Eric,

I switched to Kynar baked enamel finish on galvalume standing
seem for my buildings ten years ago when I raised the 1895 barn we moved
from Curtis Ohio. That roof still looks like the day we put it on. I now
have it on the 1815 church we relocated for our house and it looks
great. Next roof is the shop which has assfault sh*t shingles on it that
failed early. At least they failed catastrophically in a couple years so
the ugly mess won't be around long. I did the installs myself (with help
from a friend on the barn and my crew on the church), over strapping in
both cases, and the barn came to around $7500 and the house was just
over 10k.

It's crucial to remember that gauge makes all the difference.
Coil stock is usually thinner and referred to as architectural film. I
used 24ga commercial so it spans the 12" OC strapping with no
deflection.

        That's the wood guys view.

        Rudy

I have a poisonal qweschun, I need to replace my roof and I
really don't want to get "shingles" (Captn Twy) I hear it is painful
too!

My haus is a 1922 wood frame, in Neew Joisey, wood shingle sided
and originally had cedar shingles on da roof too. (Still has 'em but
covered wit 2 layers of the assfault ones!) I need to remove the
assfault cause the granules are clogging my gutters. (almost as painful
as shingles and Lipitor won't work on this!)

        Anyway, I have been contemplating a metal roof. I don't think I
can afford a copper roof but am interested in painted galvanized or
aluminium standing seam. Can anyone give me useful opines on relative
costs and performance of Copper/Alumin/Galv Steel, etc??? Also, I had
always assumed that I would need to strip everything off and install a
new wood (or plywood) deck but I recently hoid dat I might not need to
if I use a sheet metal roof. Anyone know anything about dis?
