Hi,

assuming that you have set up to boot from floppy (the default settings referred by you is the same) and you are still getting " disk error",
the only logical conclusion is the floppy drive is bad.

the best course IMHO is to see if you can borrow a floppy drive  and replace it in the system and see if any joy results.

on a side note floppy drives are dead cheap, but why pay even that, till you are sure of the causes.
