I've been following this thread, and I just ordered a Dell Inspiron E1505. When I first got it, the same dim display was noticed and when plugged in, nice and bright. On mine, to the right of the left Ctrl key is a "Fn" button with blue letters. When pressed the display brightness can be adjusted with the up/down arrow keys. Perhaps Gateway has the same ability. Now I can see the display even on battery power in bright daylight. This is helpful since I use it solely for the purpose of media source for a rather hefty DJ service. Just a thought, HTH!
