I believe that the limit is imposed by the implementation and not the 
ANSI standard.  Meaning that it's the compiler's choice as to what the 
limit is.  So on some systems it could be a small number of characters 
while other implementations might allow almost unlimited variable names.

I'd imagine that info is buried somewhere in the documentation for the 
compiler.  I'm having no luck finding the limit for GCC however.
