Simple things first. Check the sound control panel to make sure the 
sound is not muted. Check wiring connections for the speakers to the 
computer. If powered speakers, check to make sure they are turned on. Go 
to start/settings/control panel/hardware/device manager and see if there 
is any problem indicated (yellow exclamation point) for the multimedia 
and/or sound items. You might have to uninstall and reinstall drivers in 
case the first installation effort was not successful for some reason.

I'm not familiar with why Windows XP help might not respond.
