Hello Chuck, You have Windows 98 Second Edition (SE). The series of numbers you see in System Information is the SE version number. The version number for Windows 98 is 4.10.1998. You can also find the Windows version information in System Properties ("System" in Control Panel) on the General tab. You should not encounter any problems installing a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW in your system. I recommend a DVD-RW. It's really an all purpose drive as it will read your CD and DVD discs and write to recordable CD and DVD discs. I'm looking at putting a DVD drive into my system and was wondering, how I can tell if I have Windows 98 SE? I've got an older Dell OptiPlex GX1 system. This is a P3 600 with 256meg ram. Under the "System Information" it says Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A. Thanks for the many years of good advice.
