Kathleen, the power connector may be replaceable by itself.

Take a look at this URL:

The text says:
I have a Sony PCG-FX340 laptop over 3 years old which has a problem with
the DC power jack. The symptoms at the beginning where when plugged into AC
the laptop would switch to battery power on its own and if you moved the
power cord at the DC jack it would switch back. Now the laptop will not
accept AC power at all. I have replaced the hard drive myself so I am
somewhat familiar with hardware but require detailed instructions and
pictures if possible. Does anyone know how to get at and replace the DC jack?

I faced the same problem with my Fx340 earlier in 2004. I ordered the
DC-Jack (Item No. 1-779-745-21) from Sony Vaio website for $8.74 +
Shipping. After many google search I was able to download the Service
manual for PCG-F340/F350/F360. Unless you are good with your Soldering-Rod
I would not recommend changing this on your own, or you will end up with a
very heavy/costly paper weight.
Alternatively you can consider buying a port replicator (PCGA-PRFX1). This
docks to your FX340 and has a DC-in Jack. I am sure you can buy it from
eBay for less than 50$
Hope you find this info useful.
