Hugh Vandervoort's post:---- <<< Hiberfil.sys is the hibernation file, and is explained here: http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/hiberfil-sys-xp.html I have disabled/removed it several times without problem. I've heard it suggested that hibernation is more appropriate for laptops than desktops. >>> while the above url does provide very useful info on "hiberfil.sys" file deleting this file will not resolve Stephanie Trahd's problem of "copying C drive". The reason is according to the following microsoft web site apart from "hiberfil.sys" (1)pagefile.sys (2)win386.swp (3)386part.par (4)backup.log (5)restore.log are also not backed up by default and so she will encounter an error msg about "pagefile.sys" and others after deleting "hiberfil.sys". http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prdg_dsm_pmpr.asp so IMO Peters' suggestion in (his post)--- <<< I assume that C: is your boot drive. You cannot copy files that are in use using a simple copy operation. To do a backup of the C: drive, you will need to use the backup program that is part of XP and allow it to do shadow copy. It usually works fairly well. However, the best way is to create an alternate boot install on your D: drive, or boot from a specially prepared boot CD (not a job for the novice). Then boot to the alternate boot and do the backup. None of your normal boot files will be in use and will copy fine >>> will be a more certain of achieving the goal.
