a partial list of Berkeley's vegetarian restaurants: http://www.berkeleydailyplanet.com/article.cfm?issue=08-26-05&storyID=22188 Berkeley is very veg-friendly. Besides the places listed above, others that come to mind are: Cafe Muse, on Durant Avenue behind the University Art Museum - has many raw vegan dishes on the menu Numerous Indian restaurants that serve veg dishes - but most such food is heavily spiced and/or oily There's an Italian vegetarian place on Center Street - never been there, so can't comment... Long Life Vegi/Seafood on University - Chinese, cheap, close to UC Berkeley campus, popular Numerous street vendors near UC Berkeley campus - salads, baked potatoes, Greek foods, etc. A restaurant that used to be strict vegan but now sells chicken and veggie items - Durant/Telegraph Multiple juice bars - conventional "Western" and Asian tapioca tea places abound Whole Foods at Ashby/Telegraph - carries those grossly overpriced raw dehydrated foods. Can you afford to spend $5 for 150 gms of raw crackers? There used to be a raw juice bar on Addison Street downtown - don't know if they are still open In a category by themselves: Berkeley Bowl - largest selection of produce in Northern California, and possibly the largest single source selection of produce in the US. An amazing place. Monterey Market - close runner-up to Berkeley Bowl. These 2 stores were described as "produce palaces" by a jealous SF newspaper columnist some years ago. San Francisco has nothing that can compete. Caffeine/coffee shops are very popular here (caffeine is the "drug of choice" for many). Most such shops sell salads, juices, and (veggie) sandwiches. Nearby Oakland is relatively veg friendly as well. What is surprising is that San Francisco, which describes itself locally as"The City", is not very veg-friendly in comparison to Berkeley or even Oakland. Tom Billings
