I don't run Norton AV by itself, but as part of Norton Systemworks. So there may be some differences in using AV. Go to 'Options' and there will be a page (the first page that opens for me) where you can designate what Norton is to do when a virus is found. I use the 'recommended' methods. While there, you might want to look at the rest of the options to find how Norton AV can be configured. I am not familiar with a menu on the left side of the screen as you describe.. Hope this helps.
