Hi -- The figure I've seen is that about 30% of babies who are dairy-intolerant (or allergic) also have trouble with soy. I don't know what the figures are for people older than 12 months of age ... As for the estrogen-like qualities of soy, well, any food is fine when eaten in moderation. As for what to drink? When you wean a baby (from the breast or from formula) you do NOT wean to a different form of milk. Rather, you wean to a well- balanced diet including a variety of nutrition sources. Cow's milk, a staple of the Western diet, contains (for our nutritional purposes) water, fat, protein and calcium. So if you're not drinking milk, then drink water or juice (for fluids) get your fat anywhere you like it, get your protein from meat or nuts, and that leaves calcium as the only thing that requires serious thought. (In our house we get calcium from enriched juices, chewable calcium supplements from the health food store, tinned fish, fresh fish and broccolli.) We don't push the soy at our house because while milk allergy runs on my husband's side, soy allergy runs in my side!
