Just a little more for you to consider, and this happened to me... not only did the modem get cooked by a lightening strike, but it also rendered the PCI slot useless. Took a while to figure that out, but after swapping the sound card with the new modem, and then the LAN card with the modem, everything that I plugged into that slot quit working! It became evident where the problem was.
