Cuyler,
The Gazelle is indeed a cutie. Who made them, when and where? And no wonder you're off in the north woods--you'd probably have to chase the chickies away with a stick if you went out in public with that thing.

This little Gazelle, 1929 Mercedes Roadster replica, was built in 1969 from a kit. The story goes that the original owner used it to drive to the golf course in his retirement, but he soon became blind. He then would simply sit in it in his driveway, soaking up the sun and feeling happy. Later, it sat in a garage for 30 years because the next owner bought it for his teenage son, but the son thought it was a sissy car and wanted a chopped down Caddy and would not touch it. When I got it, there were only 4,200 km on the odometer.

I would love to learn about the original company. Someone said the kits came from Florida. Today, parts and the original manual for this and similar little sporty cars (they even talk Morgan) are available by mail from MG Magic in Hollywood, Florida.

Just to have a few minutes of glory snuggled down behind the wheel, does make it easier to get up in the morning and want to drive to work. Somehow this little car makes everyone smile. Seeing the same reaction everywhere, and on all kinds of faces, I can not understand why car makers are not building something like this today. Today's liberated chickies are too dull and confused by the airiness of the thing, but guys can never stay away, asking if they can take it for a spin. They all want to hear the horns, and "V" fingers fly from young folk on sidewalks and in thunderbuggies along the streets. It is really a nuisance to get so much attention (since it is not (yet) from eager chickies), but fresh air on the face and the lively roar of the VW engine is worth all the bother of dealing with the crowds. It is also fun to be in a Wal-Mart parking lot and see young conservative parents try to ignore the car while their kids are going nuts with excitement and pointing fingers. At least there is hope for the next generation! Any sports car is fun to drive. This one has the extra benefit of shedding happy smiles where ever it goes. When taking it out, I feel like someone walking their dog. I'm just the lucky chauffer.
