Depends from player. Oldest not support directories at all, for example
Philips AZ1100 radio MP3 CD player. Newer radios support folders
and subfolders usually 6-8 level but not always playlists (.m3u files)
but plays them in alpaphetical older. I write small programm for file
numbering.

At least some newest players  support also playlists and other audio file
formats
like Windows Media, MP3pro and disk formats like UDF.

As you already understand - no standard at moment.
