JOHANNESBURG, Oct 1 (AFP) - South African investigators have arrested 22 Nigerian citizens in Johannesburg who ran an online scam claiming to represent local banks listed on the Johannesburg stock exchange, a report said Tuesday. The elite Scorpions unit arrested the racketeers who operated seven websites including fake South African Reserve Bank and Development Bank of South Africa sites. Investors were duped into opening online accounts with these banks, the Business Day newspaper said. To register victims were asked to pay 10,000 dollars and an additional 40,000 dollars in tax and insurance. Some 28 people, mainly from outside South Africa were in online negotiations to invest money. One victim was duped ino investing two million rands (190,000 dollars), the report said. The Scorpions have since shut down the fake reserve bank and development bank sites, www.sarb.org.za and www.devbanksa.org sites. According to the report, five other sites were still operational: Continental Bank (www.continentalbankofafrica.com); Full Trust Bank (www.fulltrust.com); Afritrust Bank (www.afritrustbank.com); Chartered Investment Trust Bank (www.citbonline.com) and Eagle Bank Limited (www.eaglebanklimited.com).
