The main reason to keep programs on another partition is so you don't lose them when you have to format the OS
partition. You don't necessarily have to reinstall all of your programs - most will just require you run their
setup.exe to install to the existing directory. Some will require the CD, but large programs installed from CD
should be reinstalled from CD anyway. I doubt there's any need to uninstall them first, unless you plan on changing
your CD-ROM or DVD drive letters during the OS reinstall. Personal files and documents will need to be moved or
copied before you format.

I keep my programs and personal files on another hard drive altogether, so I have them if the OS hard drive dies as
well. hth
