What do you get when you type FDISK? Does it see the Hard Drive? It may be formatted in NTFS. Make sure the HDD is correctly recognised. Have you opend the case? Make sure that the IDE ribbon is attached correctly. Red line goes on the side of pin 1. You probably need a magnifying glass to read it on the mobo, but pin 1 on the HDD is usually on the side of the power outlet. Make sure the power is connected correctly (almost impossible to get wrong, but yellow usually goes to the end). Is this the only drive in the system. Remove all the jumpers on the drive. This sets the drive to Stand-Alone. If this hasn't helped, perhaps you could give more details, especially about the mobo and any error messages (POST) you get while you boot. If you get no errors while you boot maybe you should check your BIOS settings (there is a setting where the machine will stop on all errors/no errors/FDD errors. Set this to all errors. (I can't check where in the BIOS at the moment for obvious reasons:-)) Good luck Brendon > -----Original Message----- > From: PCBUILD - Personal Computer Hardware discussion List > [mailto:[log in to unmask]]On Behalf Of Josh Caulder > Sent: 13 May 2002 01:57 > To: [log in to unmask] > Subject: [PCBUILD] Cannot get DOS to recognise HD > > > I bought a used harddrive(WD 20GB UATA 100/7200rpm) from a > friend and cannot get DOS to cahange from A:> to C:> for me > to be able to format it.
