Hello all! I just set up a network of two machines for a friend -- one NT 4.0 Server, one Windows98 client. I set up TCP/IP using static addresses. Each machine appears in Network Neighborhood in the domain I created; I mapped the network drives, and both machines can exchange files. Purely for fun, I decided to ping both boxes, using the machine names. The NT box can ping itself and the windows box getting an immediate response. However, the Windows98 box can ping iself, but when I attempt to ping the NT box, it(windows98) launches dial-up networking. I am somewhat confused by this behavior since I put the machine names and their corresponding IP addresses in both Hosts and LM Hosts for good measure. Clearly, the name of the NT box is not being resolved to its IP address by the Windows98 box. Again, everything is working, but for the sake of my education can anyone enlighten me as to where I erred in this matter?
