I never tried to repair existing gear myself. Although in college, I had an Electricity and Magnetism physics proff who was very good at describing diagrams, he wasn't always around and everyone else was abysmal at it. Moreover, as gear became smaller and smaller, it became increasingly difficult to trace wiring by touch. So I let others do the work. However, I did build some of my own gear and, as I said earlier, used terminal strips and had the diagrams from the Braille Technical Press so they were already described and all I had to do was mount the stuff on perf board and away I went.
