Hello,

I purchased a new Compaq Presario last weekend that came pre-loaded with Windows Me (I wanted to update my hardware before XP and its authentication nonsense). Already, however, I'm having trouble--it doesn't want to shut down properly, requiring a hard shutdown. Haven't even gotten to transfer files or programs yet--about the only thing we did was install Netscape and connect with our ISP. Really doubt that can be the problem. Installed an older (not buggy 6.x) version of Netscape. Don't recall the version exactly.

The system is a 1.4G Intel, with a 40G hard drive, CD-RW, and DVD-ROM. Haven't used anything but the CD, for reviewing the Help files.

I expect to take the machine back to the store, and reluctantly wait for XP and its more stable architecture, but thought first I'd check and see if this is a common problem with ME and if there's an easy, permanent solution.

This happened from time to time on our old HP/Win98 machine, but didn't start until we'd had that at least a year and had loaded it up with all sorts of (sometimes unnecessary) software.

TIA,

Beth
