I have just contacted a friend of mine working in the local phone company,
and i found out that the distance (physical line distance) from the
distribution box at my home to the local exchange is about 1km. So, I
suspect that the culprit behind my poor modem performance is most probably
the poor phone line / high SNR.

As an example, my download speed now average at 4Mbit/s while previously it
was at 8Mbit/s. Yes, it is still low, but that is what I have to put up with
especially when the phone company is a monopoly here in Malaysia where I
live.

So my question now is, are there any way that I can use to determine the
level of noise on my phone line, either software or hardware? Or, do you
guys have any idea on how to construct a device for that purpose? A
URL/pointer to a circuit diagram would be nice.

Thanks.
