I've had these symptoms with both bad memory and also with memory that had
come slightly loose in the socket.  It also will happen if the memory
builds up a layer of oxidation between the contacts and the memory DIMM or
SIMM.  If he has multiple DIMMs, Try with one and then the other alone to
see if one stick only is problematic.
