It seems to me that taking a bite of each food in rotation is simply a
matter of (Euro-American) etiquette and that those who lived during
1880-1942 used the term "Indian" to mean "uncivilized person". I don't know
of any reason why it should be better to eat around your plate (my
half-Mohawk grandmother calls this "eating like a bird" and considers the
practice to be very rude) than to eat all of this, followed by all of that.
