Maybe the simple solution (or value engineering) for the rotting pumpkin is
some orange paint and a glade air freshener.

We buy live tree's and plant them afterward. A friend's mother heard us
talking about that and decided to plant hers. Of course it was a cut tree,
but that didn't seem to bother her. When the needles fell of, she just
painted the naked tree green (as well as the side of the refrigerator by the
door you looked out into the back yard where the tree was planted).

She also had an aquarium with no fish. Stayed much cleaner she claimed.

Not exactly historically signif, but hysterically important.
