I recently tried to install IE 5.5 on top of 5.01 and my screen froze at the reboot. Reset was the only way out I could think of, but it was impossible to get my WIN95B going again. Eventually I had to use my trustworthy boot-disk and restore the system using ERU, fortunately the backup was only a few weeks old.
Got everything working and IE was still there, after a fashion. The opening screen said IE5.5 but the information in help/about said version 5.01 (after - literally - several minutes) and all the encryption was gone. IE repair didn't do anything and it flatly refused to let itself be uninstalled, saying that some uninstall-files were missing. Of course my Netscape was still alright but I hate to have junk like this around cluttering up my disk.
The arrogance of Microsoft is sometimes just too much.

However, there is a happy ending to this story. A small free 18 kB download, IEradicator from
        http:\\www.98lite.net
will almost completely remove IE from your system. I used it and got rid of it and I feel nice and clean without it. I might try installing IE again at a later time and version, now I know I can undo it again. But I'll be very apprehensive about installing on top of another version.

YMMV of course but HTH anyway
