When I was a kid one of the best places to buy new vinyl was the Harvard Coop -- pronounced "coop" (as where chickens live). It wasn't until years later that I made the connection between "Coop" and "Cooperative Society" -- which was prominent on the sign on Mass Ave. And, no, a "kid" at Harvard was not me. I was a kid -- 10 to 17 years old -- travelling via the T from the cozy west suburbs of Boston. My younger brother Brian was the "kid" at Harvard. And, for him a "coop" is a "coop" not a "co-op" regardless of the origin of the designation "coop" for he lived among feathers, eggs, and poop. Phew! What a mess....

I am still disposed to think of most "co-ops" as "coops" given the behavior of many of the share holders...
