I don't know about the specific facility, but I do know that former president Ulysses S. Grant, ill with cancer, was at Mount McGregor when he died in 1885. I'm not sure if he was at a sanitarium or a vacation cottage or some other kind of facility. Given this one little factoid, that is, to generalize from a single example, one might speculate about a tradition (predating the 1920s) of Mt.
