Rick, I just went through the same thing and it was a virus called Anticmos. Knocked out both of my CD drives. Very frustrating since you can't reinstall anything. McAfee was very helpful in trying to help me create a rescue disk, which had to be downloaded to a non- infected computer, but they weren't too helpful telling me what to do after I used the disk. I ended up bringing my computer to Best Buy who cleaned it in 20 minutes for $40.00. I now have my CD drivers on a floppy. Good luck.
