I would love a copy of this publication, and can order it online, I guess, unless you have cheap knock-off copies. Is $30 plus shipping good value?
We are saving and cleaning, gently, the original aluminum double-hung windows in Burton Tower on University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus. They are in excellent condition, although initially thought to be non-original. They have single-pane glass, but most windows are not against a work station, so the cold is less of a concern. Removing them would have caused extensive damage to the exterior stone and interior tile and brick.

I have a copy of "Care of Aluminum" put out by The Aluminum Association,
1983. It's a good overview, and includes several cleaning techniques. If
you would like a copy, let me know.

Johnette
Thanks for the reference to "Care of Aluminum".
Still available, and can be ordered online from www.aluminum.org
US$30 plus $5.50 p&h for non-members of the Aluminum Association (which I
guess we all are).
These guys sure know how to charge!
Cheers

Sounds like anoidized aluminum; and the white is result of air-born chemical
attacking the anodic coating; continued neglect to the oxide coating would
lead to the pitting. You may want to get a clearer picture of the material
you are dealing with and procede from there - Or, look at an article by
Rober Baker in Glass Digest, written about 4 years ago
