What makes you think dairy does not involve slaughter? The slaughter
of
cattle is intimately tied to dairy production. What do you think
happens to
the calves who are not getting the milk that people are consuming
instead?
They are either raised to be slaughtered or put to work producing more
cow's
milk for humans. And what happens to the cows after their milk
producing
days are over? Somehow I doubt that they go to an old cows' home to
live
out their days in a nice pasture. The same is of course true for the
bulls
which impregnate the cows. As soon as they can't get it up any more,
they're history.

There are vegan "cheeses" on the market. One I find tasty is called
Hemp
Rella. It is cooked, and, like dairy cheese, it has the problem of
high
salt content. But it doesn't involve slaughter (not of animals,
anyway).
The company makes other vegan cheeses too. See http://www.rella.com
