This was posted on jr's "raw" list today - perhaps some here will
find this to be of interest.

Dear friends,

I'm writing at the request of Manis at Pangaia in Hawaii. Manis has been
eating instinctively for many years, and has experienced many unresolved
health crises and chronic conditions over the years. Through a recent
hair analysis, he believes he has tracked down the problem and wants to
alert others to his discoveries. He considers this to be VERY important
information for anyone who eats fish (raw or cooked).

Mani's hair analysis showed HIGH levels of mercury. The high end of the
normal reference range was 1.5 (that's one and a half, not 15), and
Manis' test result was 16. After Manis got his results, Ano was tested,
and his came out at 13.54. After over a month of full-time research and
investigation into all the possible dietary, dental, and environmental
factors that could be implicated in these findings, Manis is now
convinced that the mercury toxicity is due to the large amounts (5 pounds
a week) of raw fish (mostly ahi) that both he and Ano have been consuming
over the past few years (Manis even longer than Ano). Neither of them
have amalgam dental fillings; Manis had his removed over ten years ago,
and Ano only had one, which was removed about two years ago.

Manis has had urine and blood tests which have confirmed the mercury
toxicity diagnosis, and has begun a chelation therapy detox program. He
has alerted the Hawaii Health Department and arranged for testing of all
the fish at his favorite fishmarket. He is also awaiting results of soil
and water tests at Pangaia, since he has learned that the volcano south
of the Big Island is the planet's largest emitter of mercury. However,
fish does seem to be the definite culprit, because the hair analyses of
two long-time vegans who live right in Manis' neighborhood came back very
low in mercury.

So this is important information to pass on to anyone you know who eats
fish. Granted, few people eat such vast quantities of fish, but even
small amounts do bio-accumulate over the years, if one's sources are
polluted.

Manis is recommending that a small page with this information be inserted
into Ano's book, Instinctive Eating, to alert and caution readers. Ano
has agreed.

If you want further information, Manis has volunteered to help anyone who
is concerned about these matters. He is very knowledgeable about
diagnosing mercury toxicity, which he now feels to be the underlying
cause of virtually all his health difficulties. He can be reached in
Hawaii at 808-965-6069.

Best regards,
Deborah
