Arjen, based on some references which I unfortunately can't give right
now (perhaps someone else can) but would be willing to try to locate,
there is reason to believe that many (if not all) of us are not very
good at elaborating the short chain omega 3's, the only form that
naturally occurs in flax, into the longer chain forms that are
structural components of our CNS. If this is correct, flax is, in fact,
not a very good omega 3 source. Moreover, apart from the seaweeds for
which the jury is still out as far as I can tell, there may well be no
known non-animal source of long chain omega 3's. As you can probably
see, an implication of this reasoning is that our only reliable source
for long chain omega 3's might be another animal whose biochemical
machinery is capable of accomplishing the critical elaboration.

Gary:
"Well, now, ground flax isn't very natural, is it?

No that is right. And so is living in a house, driving
a car, sitting behind a computer, living in temperate
and even colder areas, wearing clothes, farming,
eating fruits and vegetables that are far removed from
their wild stage and many many other things.
Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world.
Ground flax is an easily absorbed source of omega 3
and I am not going to give that up because it is
unnatural. I might start thinking about that when I
live a more natural life and can gather more natural
foods.

Best regards, Arjen
