This is a little out of context, but a long time ago I made my own
sprouting lids and I thought it might be a good little secret to share:

You know how canning jars (Mason or Ball) have those threaded rings and
tops? Go to your grocery store and get some big ones (20 oz.) Next, go to
an arts & crafts store and look for plastic mesh sheets used for
embroidery. There are ones with coarse mesh and ones with a finer mesh (I
mostly use the coarse mesh, sesame seeds require the finer mesh). They have
round or rectangular sheets for about $1 each. Take one of your jar tops
and use it to draw circles on the plastic mesh. Cut 'em out and shove the
round mesh shapes into the jar rings and voila! Sprouting lids!

I have been using them for a year. The plastic holds up fine in the
dishwasher. Some of jar rings have gotten a little rusty.

Hope someone out there can use this little tip.

Jon

Oh yea. One more thing. I just love this folding wooden dishrack I have (do
you know the ones I mean?). It has two levels, which holds 8 jars at the
perfect angle for draining and ventilation of sprouts. I just put a foil
tray under it to catch the runoff.
