He was real.  He was a respected guy who knew a lot about how to survive in
the wilds but became a joke when he did Grape Nuts commercials:  "Ever eat a
pine tree?  Many parts are edible."  He also talked a lot about high-bush
cranberries for some reason (I guess they're good on Grape Nuts).
