There is an interesting article in the latest "National Geographic"
magazine (September 1997), on the Inuit people who live in the Arctic.
The article is titled "A Dream Called Nunavut", pgs. 68-91. The last
two pages of the article provide some interesting insight into their
diet. Brief quotes are as follows:

"We used to be ashamed of what we ate" says Muckpa. "But now we're not.
White people can eat only their food, but Inuit can eat anything. Today
we are not ashamed of who we are."

For most Inuit, meat from wild animals - called "country food" - makes up
40 to 70 percent of their diet.

"We do not kill animals this way"...."I do not like to kill something that
is suffering"...

"There are strong sanctions against causing animal suffering"..."A hunter
never kills an animal without thinking what it means to the animal."

Portions of the above may reflect on the recent vegan ethics debates.
I recommend reading the entire article.

Regards,
Tom Billings
