I can attest that Michio Kushi is indeed a heavy smoker, after having
seen him at a macrobiotics conference in California.  When I learned
this, I wondered if smoking somehow served as a yin/yang balance for
another aspect of his diet or life.

As strange as it might sound, I don't see macrobiotics as being in
total
opposition to a raw foods diet.  I frequently use the principles of
balancing foods when eating a predominantly raw food diet.  It's easy
for
me to go too heavy on the sweet fruits, and then counteract that with
too
many oily or dense foods.  Macrobiotics give me a system of thought to
avoid these wild fluctuations and keep myself more in the middle.
