I listen to Atkins on his daily radio show, and have heard him speak of this problem on more than
one occasion, although he provides no
explanation of why it happens. He advises the use of thyroid hormone for
people who develop it. A friend of mine telephoned him for adivce, and
according to her, he said he himself became hypothyroid and took thyroid
hormone. I have only her word for this, of course. So it is ancedotal, no
studies that I know of.

What I said about hypothyroidism developing as a result of the
sympathetic nervous system being activated when the body is detoxing, and
therefore, not necessarily being an indication of pathology in the
thyroid gland is based on established physiology, which is based on
scientific evidence, but is also anecdotal in its application. Sorry I
didn't mention that. I myself was diagnosed hypothyroid when I went to
the doctor. He wanted to give me thyroid hormone, but I refused it. I was
going through some detoxing when I saw him. When I returned for a checkup
when I was no longer detoxing, all my thyroid tests were normal.

These are the reason I suspect Atkins patients may not have any pathology
of the thyroid, but may have developed some toxicosis. Speculation on my
part, of course.

My best, Ellie
