i don't think the addiction is to the bread,
potatoes, etc. so much, as the unconsciousness
that comes with it.

watch next time and see what you think.
avocadoes are certainly a substitute, however
they are very addictive!  not quite to the extent
of searching the trash for half-smoked cigarette
butts, but similar.  checking the supermarkets
etc. for ripe ones!
