Brian Livingston addressed this problem in his July 8, 1996 InfoWorld column.

His solution:

In System.ini, under [386Enh] add to make it look as follows:  

[386Enh]
;Increases stack pages from 2 to 4
MinSPs=4

He has long discussion about why it happens and what it does to fix problem.
