Had the same problem at work.. It's the GroupWise.. Search the novel website
support.Novell.com for excel and it will tell you to delete a gw*.xls (been
awhile so I don't remember). Office 2000/XP does not like GroupWise.. Here
it is: It's an ODMA problem

You can get these buttons back by disabling GroupWise integrations and
deleting (not just renaming) the GWXL97.XLA file in the XLSTART directory
(under Microsoft Office).
You should be able to close it under file/close. But even after the fix, if
I remember the X was still grayed out.

Try that and see what happens.

Subject: [PCSOFT] Excel Missing Close Option

> I just received a new PC a few days ago. Excel is missing the CLOSE
option from the Restore/Move/Size/Minimize/Maximize/Close menu, and the X in
the upper right corner is grayed out. The installation works well outside
of that. There seems to be no reduced functionality. The MS web site says
something about a missing CLOSE related to "reduced functionality" but I'm
able to run and create macros so that doesn't apply here. I'm trying to get
the System Admin to reinstall Excel (or Office) and see if that helps?

Don't think it matters, but we are running Novell Groupwise too.
