Mark,
AOL's software installation routine takes over the PC and makes whatever
changes it needs regardless of what the owner may want the PC to do.
On a daily basis, AOL downloads tons temp files and images for its
advertising, and news tidbits, and the what's new items, etc. etc. ----
and never deletes any of them.
Back in the days before gigabyte hard drives, I used to make a lot of easy
money just going in and cleaning out the AOL directories when disks filled
up. Now that we have multi-gig drives, the problem has just been hidden
(sigh.... all that easy money gone <evil grin>)
I don't have a lot of experience with AOL4.x, but from what I have seen,
they have not changed the overall scheme at all. It still takes over the
PC and does what it pleases.
