  There are three basic ways to get the size of a digital image down
to 50-60Kb:

1.  Shrink it down from "8x10"  to something more like "wallet size".
I think that's what Photo Express is doing that your husband doesn't
like.

2.  Decrease the resolution, say from 300dpi to 72dpi (a a common
printer resolution).  Can look a lot like 3, below:

3.  Allow .jpg compression to sacrifice fine details.

  I normally use some combination of 1&3 to make small/fast versions
of the mster images which stay at larger resolutions and lossless
(.tif, for instance) compression.
